Using this pattern from Betsy LaHonta, you’ll learn to make the Betsy bag: a three-in-one accessory that can be worn as a large carryall, a mid-sized drawstring bag, or a sleeker, smaller tote. The clever construction features movable straps and a tuck-away top panel that lets you modify the look, along with a secure outside pocket and interior compartments for organizing all your essentials. Best of all, there are no patterns to trace. Follow the instructions for simple-to-cut rectangles, patterns, and strips, and you’ll find the pattern sews up like a dream in Kraft-Tex and cotton fabric. A rugged paper with a soft, suede-like finish and lovely crinkles, Kraft-Tex looks, feels, and wears like leather—but sews, cuts, and washes like fabric.

- Each Kraft-Tex measures 19 x 50 in (48.26 x 127 cm)
Materials Needed
- Kraft-Tex: 1 roll for bottom panel, edge-finishing strips, straps, and D-ring anchors
- Main fabric (A): 24 in (⅔ yd) for top panel, middle panel, and outer zipper pocket
- Contrasting fabric (B): 27 in (¾ yd) for inside pocket, straps, and D-ring anchors
- Lining: 22.5 in (⅝ yd)
- Interfacing: 54 in (1 ½ yd) of 20 in (50.8 cm) wide medium-weight stiff fusible interfacing for top and middle panels and straps; 54 in (1 ½ yd) of 20 in (50.8 cm) wide lightweight flexible fusible interfacing for pockets and lining
- Fusible web: 2 straps—¼ x 7 in (0.64 x 17.78 cm—of fusible web or fabric glue to hold zipper before stitching
- Zipper: 7 in (17.78 cm) long; a longer nylon zipper can be trimmed to size
- D-rings: 8, to fit a 1 in (2.54) wide strap
- Swivel/snap hooks: 4
- Cording: 1 piece measuring 60 in (1 ⅔ yd) long
- Optional: 2–4 cord long/drawstring toggles (or see page 18 to learn how to make your own)
- Yardage based on 42 in (1 ⅙ yd) wide fabric; allow extra fabric for directional prints
